Foods That Should Never Be Combined | Side Effects of Incompatible Foods

Understanding Incompatible Foods in Ayurveda

Ayurveda places significant emphasis on the concept of incompatible foods which are combinations of foods that can negatively impact health. According to the Charaka Samhita foods with properties opposite to the body's natural composition can disturb the balance of bodily systems and lead to long-term health issues. Here's a guide to understanding such combinations and avoiding harmful dietary practices:

Foods That Should Never Be Combined

1. Milk and Sour Foods

Sour fruits like mangoes, tamarind, oranges, pineapples, tomatoes, and custard apples should not be consumed with milk. Such combinations can disrupt digestion and lead to imbalances.

2. Milk and Bananas

Pairing milk with bananas, yogurt, or buttermilk is discouraged in Ayurveda, as it may cause digestive issues and skin-related disorders.

3. Milk and Radish

Drinking milk after eating radish, tulsi, or similar foods can trigger severe skin conditions over time.

4. Fish and Milk

Fish and milk are considered incompatible due to their differing effects on the body. Combining them may lead to skin ailments and digestive disturbances.

5. Hot Honey

Heating honey transforms it into a toxic substance. Consuming honey with hot water or mixing it in equal amounts with ghee is considered harmful.

6. Curd and Milk

Eating curd with milk, jaggery, or ghee is discouraged as it can reduce vitality and cause imbalances.

7. Fenugreek and Urad Dal

Fenugreek should not be consumed alongside urad dal, as this combination can disturb digestion.

8. Sugarcane Juice and Fish

Avoid drinking sugarcane juice after eating fish, as it may lead to digestive and skin issues.

Harmful Combinations to Avoid with Milk

- Pumpkin, cucumber, bitter gourd, or gourd vegetables

- Sprouted grains or dried vegetables

- Meat, especially goat, ox, or boar

- Honey and fermented products

Side Effects of Incompatible Foods

Regularly consuming incompatible food combinations may cause immediate reactions such as hives, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps. Over time, they can lead to severe health issues like skin diseases, psoriasis, anemia, ulcers, gas, impotence, or even dementia.

Ayurvedic Wisdom for Balanced Health

Ayurveda teaches us to respect the natural properties of food and their effects on the body. Following these guidelines can help maintain a balanced digestive system and prevent long-term health complications. For optimal health, always pair foods thoughtfully and avoid these harmful combinations.
